Artist Statment
Somewhat site specific, our P.S.A. poster images are based on the hyper-sexualized advertising posters found around the neighborhood of East Williamsburg, and have been designed and placed in such a way as to nearly blend in with the advertisements around them. Trash Against Trash was inspired by two traits of the neighborhood: the massive amount of degrading images of women resulting from their excessive use in advertising campaigns, and the massive amount of litter on the streets.
Through an unusual juxtaposition of sex and P.S.A., Trash Against Trash intends to inspire its viewer to question the pervasive nature of objectification of women and littering, as well as consider its relationship with the economic decline of the neighborhood.
Additionally, it is curious why the combination of sex and a public service announcement feels so unusual. Trash Against Trash has the additional function of questioning the difference between the advertising methods of for-profit organizations and those of the non-profit. Why is it that one often utilizes sex and other psychological manipulations while the other does not? This question speaks to the priorities of our community, as well as those of human nature as a whole.
